Inexplicable pic of Bryan Brown

Well, not entirely inexplicable... see below!

But keep in mind...

"Cocktail: is a thinly veiled analogy of 'Scientology' with Bryan in the 'L. Ron Hubbard' Role!

Burt Convy, and his subsequent death...

I remember, he beat Shirley Partridge's carpets!

Convy - Lord Zombie in that 'Charleton Heston', 'Centre Square' kinda way...

Host of several game shows for some time...

For example.. 'PASSWORD'... "The Password is 'Twin'... thanks Burt!

yet

he's no Peter Marshall

"Circle gets the square!"
He's no Dr. Zaius! ...or a Paul Williams

Definitely NOT a Heston..... Not since Cooper...

I'm having a drunken 'Omega Man' meets 'Hollywood Squares' type of fantasy!

The Courtship of Burt Convy's Death

Not since the death of Abe Vigoda...

"Damn you Fish!!!"

Slap fight between classic Abe Vigoda "Fish" and Richard "I was the stand-up comic in 'Scarface'! Belzer..

also in HOMOCIDE: Life in My Pants!

Oh wait.. Abe was in "Joe Vs. The Volcano!"... AND the "Godfather" series... he's got some pedigree...

by the way...

Abe Vigoda is Alive!!!!

as is "Number Five", but you don't hear him bragging.

But what about Belzer?

Vigoda never says, "Still? Really?"

Personally, I think James Hong and Abe Vigoda are lovers. That is how the world would make sense to me....

Escape from the Valley of Suzy Wong

Pose her, play with her, comes with Easybake Wok!

Precious Memories presents:"My Little China Girl"

Opium Den Barbie

okay that's just evil... let's counterbalance that out with...

Just one picture of Anna May Wong

from "The Toll of The Sea"

hmmm... oddly resembles photo above... but no matter....
Anna's biggest break was when she landed the role of a Mongol slave girl 1924's THE THIEF OF BAGDAD. This film helped her to become the only Chinese-American to make it to major movie stardom. It also helped her into parts of movies with a Chinese or Orient theme. Sometimes Anna would be the heroine and sometimes the wicked adversary. In 1926, she made A TRIP TO CHINATOWN which further enhanced her status among the filmgoing public. With her trademark bangs and Oriental dress, Anna developed into a very beautiful actress. Before long her name was synonymous with enigmatic Chinese productions. Films such as THE DEVIL DANCER (1927), ACROSS TO SINGAPORE, and THE CRIMSON CITY (both made in 1928) kept movie fans coming to the theaters. By the early 1930's she had not only made the successful move into 'talkies', but also became a globetrotting star making motion pictures in Europe. Upon her return to the US after three years, Anna was signed to a contract with Paramount. She reached the height of her career when she headlined in 1932's SHANGHAI EXPRESS along with Marlene Dietrich. In 1938, Anna played Lan Ying in DANGEROUS TO KNOW with Charles Laughton, Lloyd Nolan, and Anthony Quinn. In this film, she was a kept woman seeking revenge when the gangleader tries to replace her. This film offered plenty of melodrama and was well received at the box-office.

for more info see www.anna-may-wong.com. Dwell not upon the sadness, but rejoice in her courage.

ok... maybe just one more pic...

She's funky!
Dear Anna
You almost made it... I blame Fatty Arbuckle, Communism, Joe Mcarthy, and the depression.... oh, and racism.

Sometimes what might have been is better than...

oh screw it, why couldn't shit just work out sometimes? I imagine a Valhalla where Anna May Wong and Paul Robeson toss pineapple grenades at the Cesar Romero and Barry Fitzgerald...

Cesar Romero (not Cesar Chavez)
Barry "The BZA" Fitzgerald

I imagine a better world... I'm gonna kill nazis now....

Asian-American Character Actors... in er, America...

James Hong

Perhaps the most consistently employed Asian-American (Double A from here on out) in ALL OF HISTORY!!! Certainly the Greek Tragedists rarely utilised the talents of the Double A actors... With a resume that includes Kung Fu, Chinatown, Blade Runner, and Days Of Our Lives, James Hong has consistently kept the Bok Choy in the fridge. You wish you could count the productions he's been in... Born is 1929 and STILL ALIVE!!!!!!!

Keye Luke

From Son #1 in "Charlie Chan" to "Kung Fu" the original series, Mr. Luke saw things change, yet stay the same. The sad truth is that Asians in the Entertainment Industry still have to work with, and continue to struggle against cultural and racist stereotypes.

Not every Asian person knows Martial Arts... just most of them.

And as for 'Inscrutability', I can personally attest to having tried to 'scrute' quite a few Asians, with no luck.

At least the popular TV miniseries "Vanishing Son" tried to combat these myths, by having the two lead characters break into Kung Fu at the slightest provocation. Two brothers... one is a classical Cellist, the other a gangbanger from beyond the grave.

"It speaks to the truth of the Asian-American Experience": Ken Burns.

Yet the sad truth is that these hackneyed productions provide valuable employment for struggling actors.

Cheesy Director:
"Hey Mr. Hong, great to work with you.. big fan of your work, big fan.... anyway, your character is "Ching Chong', a deadly, Kung-Fu-Fighting, Opium-Smuggling Chinese Warlord..."

Victor Wong

As you knew him. Died in 2001

Education: University of California, Berkeley (political science, journalism); University of Chicago; San Francisco Art Institute (painting).

Brother of Zepplin Wong. (!) That's quite an achievement in itself

One of television's first Chinese American reporters. He worked on the daily "Newsroom" program on KQED, San Francisco's public TV station, 1968-1974.

Wong's first art exhibit was hosted by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, owner of City Lights Bookstore. Wong, Ferlinghetti and writer Jack Kerouac were friends, with Kerouac mentioning Wong in his book "Big Sun."

Retired from showbusiness in 1998 after suffering two strokes.

Claimed casting directors liked him because of his "lopsided" face, which was caused by Bell's palsy, a facial nerve disorder that struck him in middle age.

Studied theology at the University of Chicago.

Was a fourth generation Chinese-American.

Still had to play 'Grandpa Mori' in "3 Ninjas Kick Back" and 'Old Chong the Piano Teacher' in "The Joy Luck Club", which employed ALL of the Double A actors mentioned here and then some.

sigh

Some might say we've come a long way from "The Flower Drum Song" and "Charlie Chan", and that might be true... but I'm still waiting for "Kung Fu: The Pants Continue" for some sweet Double A Redemption.... how about starring 'Shannon Lee?".

We'll call it even....

Bruce Lee's daughter, dimwits

and what could possibly go wrong?

"Jack Burton... me!"

Grosso guaio a Chinatown (en Italiano)

"Son of a bitch must pay!"

Big trouble in Little Pants

"Son of a bitch must pay... for my glasses!"

Carter Wong: Master of Kung Fu... English not so much.

Ooooh, Lightning FX! Bryan Brown is SOOOOO jealous!

i just thought this shot was really cool... the basket of fire collapsing behind him... I mean really, how do you come up with stuff like that? Drugs?

Oh No! The Lords of Death! Just casually hanging out at the Airport. You know, the place you can steal Asian girls from...

Grand Hotel

The lives and loves of several people intertwine during a stay at Berlin's most expensive hotel. I know it sounds like every episode of Love Boat, but it's really a hell of lot better than that!

John Barrymore

Poor chap gets his head bashed in quite nicely...

Greta Garbo

Say what you will, just don't say Ice Queen!!! More Vivacious than Ava Gardner and Vivian Leigh combined! Goofy, restrained, animated and beautiful! Just say Garbo!

Film History

Joan Crawford steals a few scenes in this movie by the way!

(Also pictured: Wallace Beery.... sorry)

In Loving Memory of Northern J. Calloway

Can't find a pic of him.... Played 'David' on 'Sesame Street' for years... died under mysterious circumstances...
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0130590/

Have you ever wondered where some of your old pals have gone?

One of the most asked-about characters from Sesame Street's early years is David, played by Northern Calloway. We all remember David's funny, upbeat nature and his crazy fashion style that earned him the nickname "cat in the hat."

Between 1970 and 1989, Sesame Street's David studied law, flirted with Maria (before her marriage to Luis, of course), and helped run Mr. Hooper's store. Off camera, Northern Calloway was a talented stage actor who starred in Broadway's "Pippen" and the 1972 movie "Together for Days." Calloway passed away in 1989, leaving a void in the Sesame neighborhood.

HOW DID HE DIE?????

This might help you get there...
http://www.toughpigs.com/anthhipster01.htm

"I posted the same question a few years ago and there's not too much information about Mr. Calloway. Which is unfortunate given that he was such an important member of the cast for so long. I love listening to him sing "My Name" on the Sesame Street Live album from the 70's.I also love the aforementioned sketch of him drawing shapes with Frank's Square character. One of my favourites as well."
Scott

Well, thanks Scott for your letter, i just love the name 'Northern'....

Highway to the Danger Zone

OK, THEN.... PHOTOS OF EVERYONE

Starting with Rudy Vallee

This unmailed (early?) 1930s linen-surfaced postcard (issued by E.C. Kropp) shows the ensemble of "'The Famous Hollywood Cabaret' Restaurant" in NYC, with Rudy Vallee inset in the corner. The card is in excellent condition except for a small crease on the lower left tip.

Annette Hanshaw

Annette Hanshaw was a popular singer and radio star of the 1920s and early Thirties who had many Jazz overtones in her singing style. She stepped out of her role of a torch singer and improvised and had a great deal of swing that harkened to the Big Band singers of the 1930s.

Paul Whiteman

His name couldn't be more ironic. He couldn't be fatter. He couldn't be whiter. "Mr. Whiteman, the lead singer from Ra-Ho-Wa is on the line....".

Did he once claim to want to "Make a lady of Jazz?"...

Yet he was the Elvis of his generation

and Vaughnn Monroe

'Old Leather Tonsils', as he was affectionately known...

Got his start with the 'MoonMaids'... apparently there's a 'Tell-All' somewhere

"Racing with the Moon" indeed!!!!!
